Hey Guys!

Have you ever wanted to walk the walls of Dubrovnik but didn’t know if you were up for it?   Maybe you heard there are 1080 steps on and along the path?   Well, it’s true.

If this sounds like you don’t worry.   I’ve put together some of my favorite photos I took from my walk around the wall for you to enjoy!  I sincerely hope this helps anyone who can’t physically enjoy this activity!

I’ll be totally honest here and admit I’d never heard of Dubrovnik before.    Game of Thrones was a series I binge watched and as far as I knew it was filmed in Hollywood.

Dubrovnik was simply one of our stops on the Mediterranean Odyssey we took with Viking Ocean Cruises.   I didn’t realize how amazing it was until I started my pre-vacation research.   My Bad!

In my defense, it wasn’t until recently that Dubrovnik hit the map as a hot vacation destination.   In fact, American Airlines just started their direct flights from Dallas to Dubrovnik this year.

The Pearl of the Adriatic

Dubrovnik is a beautiful city aptly named the Pearl of the Adriatic.   I thought this claim might be a little exaggerated until I spent a day here.   This city is nothing short of magnificent.   Cafe’s and shops line the city streets and fresh laundry hangs from apartment windows.

The contrast between the red tiled roofs and the deep blue Adriatic sea is breathtaking.   I could seriously stay in Dubrovnik for a week.    But once you’ve walked through the city, you need to walk the wall.   Everything looks different from the top of the walls.

The Walls of Dubrovnik

The walls of Dubrovnik were built to defend the city against pirates and other unwanted attacks around the 12th century.  In more modern times the region has been though a lot as well.   The fact the walls are still intact, despite multiple wars and disputes in the region is impressive.

As you walk and look around it’s easy tell the old and new roofs apart.  The old roofs are very faded and discolored while the new is bright terracotta colored.

There are cats everywhere.   And I mean everywhere!    Don’t be surprised if you need to step over a few as they nap on the stairs in your path.

And the laundry hanging across lines by the wall is actually really cool.   In fact, I met a few ladies who where only taking pictures of the laundry.   I didn’t quite understand their facilitation with it.  But on the off chance anyone reading this loves to see hanging laundry, this is the post for you.

Challenges of Walking the Wall

As I said before, the wall has a total of 1080 steps.   This is a lot of steps and will prove very difficult for anyone with mobility issues.    The weather can also prove difficult depending what time of year you travel.

We walked the wall in April and it took about 2 hours.   The weather was amazing and the crowd was at a minimum.   Dubrovnik can get very crowded, so try to visit during shoulder season.   Bring sunscreen and a hat if you are sensitive to the sun.   And don’t forget some extra money!   You can stop at vendor stations along the wall for water and ice cream.   There’s even a cafe with pizza.

Photo Journal

If the steps and physical demands prevent you from being able to enjoy the unbelievable view, don’t worry.   I’m including this photo journal just for you.   I hope you enjoy the tour around the wall.    Everyone should be able to see this beauty!
