Elton John Farewell Yellow Brick Road Stage

No other performer does it quite like Elton John.   His style and performances are legendary.  And for good reason.  The second Elton enters the stage he gives the audience everything he’s got.   He is a true performer and doesn’t let off the gas for almost three hours.

With a farewell tour spanning over three years and including over 300 shows, Elton John has far surpassed his previous legendary status.   If you love concerts and love Elton John, you really should consider his farewell tour.

Getting Tickets To Elton John’s Farewell Tour

Since I’ve seen Elton John before, I knew I would get tickets to his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.  And you better believe as soon as the American Express Presale was up in January 2018, I snagged my Crocodile Rock VIP Tickets for the December 2018 show.  American Express and Citi Presales are great ways to make sure you get good seats for concerts.

There are several different levels of VIP tickets available and you get some fun Elton gear in addition to your VIP ticket.  But read the fine print.  You will get your Elton bag of goodies after the concert by mail.   So don’t expect it at the concert, like I did.   I was very happy though when it arrived just three days after the concert.  So it doesn’t take long.

So, as you can see, the Farewell Yellow Brick Road VIP Package is the ultimate package.   I’ll admit I got super excited when I saw that an exclusive back stage tour comes with this package.   But then I read there are no meet and greets with Elton.   Since meeting Elton was off the table, I chose the Crocodile Rock package because I was afraid I might not be able to see from the twentieth row on the floor with the Rocket Man Package.

All the VIP packages, except the Farewell Yellow Brick Road VIP Package, are really based solely on where you want to sit.   The merchandise is all the same so you will want to chose based on price and seats for the venue.

You don’t have to chose a VIP Package to attend the concert.   I did because I wanted the mysterious VIP Gift Bag.

VIP Merchandise Gift Bag

This is the merchandise I received for the Crocodile Rock VIP Package.   Pretty cool stuff!   You’ll notice there’s no t-shirt in the gift bag so if you want one you need to get it at the concert.

Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road Concert

We arrived as soon as the doors opened at 6:30 to shop and roam around American Airlines Center.   If you can arrive early, it’s best.   We spent an hour walking around and admiring everyone’s Elton John costumes.   One man had on his rendition of the famous rhinestone baseball uniform.  Others people had silver sequin jackets and there were a lot of men and women wearing multicolored boas.   But the most worn accessory worn Elton John accessory was large, light up Elton John glasses.  Man, I wish I would’ve dressed up for it.   What fun!

The lines for merchandise are crazy long and Elton starts his concerts on time.   Not many performers do, but Elton does!

First Half Of The Concert

The show was scheduled to start at 8pm and by 8:05pm Elton was on stage opening with one of my all time favorites, “Bennie and the Jets.”

The second song of the night was “All The Girls Love Alice.”

Elton immediately followed with “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues”.

The fourth song was “Border Song”,  which I really like as well.   All of Elton’s songs are amazing, but I didn’t record them all.   I was enjoying the concert.

The fifth song was “Tiny Dancer”.   Please excuse my shaky videos.   I was seriously enjoying the concert and trying to adjust the screen so I wouldn’t have videos of the backs of anyone’s heads.

“Philadelphia Freedom” was the sixth song and got the entire crowd on their feet.

The seventh song was “Indian Sunset”.   During this time many fans took the opportunity to sit down.  But everyone was quickly back on their feet when Elton started the eighth song, “Rocket Man”.

Elton’s performance of “Rocket Man” was simply phenomenal.    I recorded the entire song so I could watch it again and share with you.

Elton followed with “Take Me To The Pilot” and “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” as the ninth and tenth songs of the evening.  “Levon” was the eleventh song and “Candle In The Wind” was the twelfth.   This was the official halfway mark of the concert.

Second Half Of The Concert

Elton left the stage for a quick wardrobe change.    This was seriously just a wardrobe change not an intermission.   Several people left to get a drink or walk around then came running back in when they heard the music start again.  So if you decide to go to Elton’s Farewell concert, remember this is basically non stop for almost three hours!

“Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding” was a fantastic opening for the second set, complete with smoke machines and Elton’s piano moving across the stage.

The fourteenth and fifteen songs were “Burn Down The Mission” and “Believe”.   Followed by another one of my all time favorites, “Daniel”.

The 17th and 18th songs were “Sad Songs” and “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me”.   While these are two of my favorites also, I couldn’t get any video without hands swaying back in forth right in front of me.   So I just took this time to sing along.

“The Bitch Is Back” was the 19th song Elton played and I did get some fun video footage of this one.   The movies playing in the background were perfect, especially this one.

“I’m Still Standing” was next followed by “Crocodile Rock”.   I was amazed we could hear Elton at all during Crocodile Rock.  The audience danced, clapped and sang the entire song.    The lyrics are right, your feet just can’t be still during this song!

“Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” was the last song before the encore.

Everyone loves this song and the production was amazing.   Gold confetti dropped from the ceiling and sparkled beautifully with the stage lights.  It was so bright my iPhone had problems focusing as I moved the camera around, but you can still see how amazing it is.

After this finale level performance, Elton left the stage for another brief costume change.  He quickly returned to the stage with a long kimono style robe with a sparkling lapel to play “Your Song”.

Farewell Yellow Brick Road Finale

The final song of the evening was “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.”   I must admit, at this stage of the performance I was a bit sad because I knew this would be the end of the concert.   While I didn’t record the last song, I was able to record Elton John leaving the stage.   After singing the last song, Elton took off his long robe to reveal a signature Elton John track suit before leaving.   Then he left as only Elton can do, up and escalator and through a magical opening in the stage, waving us all a fond farewell.

The Best Farewell From Elton John

In total, Elton played 24 songs including many of his old time favorites.   He spoke to the audience briefly on several occasions.  Elton genuinely thanked everyone for attending his concerts over the last 50 years.  And he also touched on the success of his AIDS/HIV Foundation.  But mostly, he played his heart out and it showed.

At 71 years old, Elton is a treasure to the music industry and loved by all.  I saw every generation represented at the concert, young and old.   And really, why not?   He is one of the most loved artists of all time.

His songs have stood the test of time and his graciousness as an artist shows through during his performance.   His stamina during his performance is unrivaled by many rock stars.    I certainly hope he can keep up with his grueling tour schedule for over three years.   I plan to see him again before his Farewell tour comes to an end.

Have you seen the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour yet?  Or have you bought your tickets yet?    You won’t regret it!
