A Simple Reminder to Always “Promise Yourself”

When I come home from a beautiful destination, whether it is near or far, I always bring back a new sense of well being.  I feel relaxed and happy.  I’ve taken thousands of new photos to share with my friends, which I love.   I’ve explored new places and learned new things.  I’ve tried new food and I’ve learned something new.   I’ve learned about history and experienced new cultures.

Then somewhere between dumping out the suitcases and going through the mail, the stress starts to creep back in.   I can’t wait to get back to my computer and plan my next trip.   Then I thought, why am I allowing my life to stress me out?   It’s what affords me the luxury of travel.

So I started thinking, what am I feeding my soul with when I’m not traveling.  And I found this.   It’s simple and to the point.   Sometimes we need a reminder to enjoy every day.   To simply be our best, regardless of what tasks lie before us.   A reminder that each and every day is just as important as the last.

Everyday we make promises.   A promise to meet a deadline.  A promise to make dinner.  A promise to pay the bills.   Promises to our family and friends.    But what do we promise ourselves?

This is something I read everyday now.   A simple reminder to always make a promise to myself too, to be my best.

Promise Yourself

To be so strong that nothing

can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness, and prosperity

to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel

that there is something in them,

and make your optimism come true.

To think only the best, to work only for the best,

and to expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others

as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past

and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times

and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself

that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear,

and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world,

not in loud words but great deeds.

To live in faith that the whole world is on your side

so long as you are true to the best that is in you.
